The cover image of this PDF supplement caught my eye yesterday as I was absolutely not doing any kind of super secret DM-type research. Seeing it listed on the Dungeon Masters Guild, I immediately watched an awkward but favorable review on the Home Brew Crew’s YouTube channel. I’ve had several good experiences buying supplements on the DM Guild web site, so I figured I’d use up the remainder of last year’s Civ 6 tournament winnings and add The Incredible World Of Doors & Locks to my growing library.
Offered as a universal tool for roleplaying systems, this colorful 9-page supplement examines doors as significant and functional encounters, and surveys the logic relating to why doors actually exist in any particular setting. It also considers various activities, challenges, and functional relationships which may relate to any portal or lock.
(Note: This supplement is NOT another book on traps.)
The Incredible World Of Doors & Locks is colorfully designed, presenting its thoughtfully organized ideas with a remarkably clean 9-page layout (including front and back cover). It contains over a dozen tables for hashing out a variety of characteristics relating to a subject that I previously hadn’t considered in such depth.
Unfortunately, the conversational tone of this supplement’s written word is often distracting and lacking actual substance, and contains enough grammatical and punctuation errors to make reading it feel like a chore.
Conclusion
While The Incredible World Of Doors & Locks represents a reasonable argument for the value of such a resource, the ideas presented feel unrefined and unfinished. As much as I like the concept of this supplement, it leaves a lot to be desired in regards of value, and it desperately needs an editor.
