Yesterday was really fun–which is to say that I had a good time. Instead of progressing any of the storylines associated with the third scheduled session of our campaign, we spent most of our time grinding our way through two mock arena battles.
Our setup was straightforward and as even as we could make it—Chuck, Charese, and Tony got to play their characters, and I DM’d exact duplicates of their PC’s as the opposing team. This meant each team consisted of three 1st level characters—one human barbarian, one human light domain cleric, and one gnomish rogue.
This was the first time our group played through a tactical combat scenario on a battle map. We practiced a good number of core combat concepts, including:
- Initiative Variant and Speed Factor Initiative Modifiers;
- Dash (Combat Action);
- Ready (Combat Action);
- Help (Combat Actions);
- Cover;
- Death Saving Throws
I think yesterday’s exercise was particularly valuable. As I’ve been learning more about 5e’s combat mechanics, I’ve been growing increasingly concerned alarmed that our group of heroes may get themselves into serious trouble simply because no one in our group has any practical experience with 5e’s combat system.
Anyway, I hope everyone had as much fun as I did. It’s certainly given me a lot to think about.
