Blackhammer Ironworks (Aia–District of Smiths and Craftsmen)

Either by reputation, scale, or appearance, no northerner mistakes the Blackhmmer Dwarves’ Foundry in Aia for any common forge. While humble blacksmiths toil away fleeting daylight hours by banging out horseshoes and nails, or bending metal strips into simple hinges and common tools, the dwarves of Aia’s Blackhammer Ironworks ply a far more sacred and carefully-guarded dwarven craft, producing some of the finest weapons, armor and shields to be found among the Twelve Kingdoms of Men.

Beyond the gated perimeter of thick stone pillars and sharpened iron fences which surround this ramshackle compound, dozens of disproportionate and unfinished iron sculptures of varying shapes and sizes tirelessly guard a large, muddy workyard, patiently rusting between canvas-covered heaps of worked metal. Squads of crudely-welded reinforcements—sharp and wiry—grin down from the tops of most structures. Bearing jagged iron claws, their large, eyeless heads hang heavy with the rust which bleeds into the gutters at the middle of the surrounding city streets.

Housing several of Aia’s oldest buildings, the prestigious Blackhammer Ironworks has grown and spread over hundreds of years, and now dominates a full city block in Aia’s Craftsman’s District. Several small shacks and living quarters are scattered throughout the compound’s garages and workshops. A dense and chaotic halo of rust-stained buildings, shelves, carts, crates, boxes, barrels, bins, and precariously stacked piles of unrecognizable clutter obstructs any clear view of the Ironworks’ central structure—an old and imposing stone warehouse with a large, soot-stained chimney, all clearly constructed for function more than form.

Under the shifting colors and dark curtain of Azjurika’s long winter mornings, dozens of mismatched lanterns glow throughout the workyard, casting light on narrow walkways and twisting paths, and throwing shadows which dance and sway across the snow-covered rooftops and on the walls of neighboring buildings. Sharp peals of hammers and plate pierce the darkness and echo through nearby streets, ringing out from various structures. Dogs snarl and bark at passersby, regularly interrupting constant clamour. On rare occasions, somewhere deep within, shouts, cheers, or boisterous outbursts of dwarven laughter breaks the Ironwork’s most familiar audible glamour.

Exposition and Lore Moving Online

At the last minute, I let everyone in our gaming group know that I’d decided to postpone our next gaming session for a week. We’ve only played two games in this new campaign, and while I was ready to run the game I’d prepared, I’d realized that I haven’t been able to get past the idea that I absolutely can improve everyone’s experience if I take time to make some changes.

I want our games to be more engaging–more fun. I hope to streamline and refine our gaming sessions so they’ll be more exciting.

I don’t see the need to itemize all of the ideas I have in mind, but I do want to mention one change, which I feel is substantial:  In an effort to reduce the amount of time spent sharing exposition and world lore during gaming sessions, I’ll be sharing more general exposition and lore here, on this website.

The obvious trade-off is that it will be up to the players to check this website for narrative elements which I usually share during gaming sessions.

I like this idea, but I haven’t really done this before. I hope it’s not too complicated; we’ll have to see how things work out.

The Dawn’s Hope Massacre

Within a day of our heroes’ returned to Aia, word reached town that the mysterious and malevolent forces tormenting nearby communities and trade routes around the Dawn’s Hope settlement in the prior weeks had apparently brought their full force to bear on the settlement itself. With the exception of a small handful of survivors who made their escape under the cover of darkness, all of the men, women, and children of the Dawn’s Hope settlement were reported as missing or dead.

The great spectacle of the local military response to these reports came swiftly. Confronted by clear evidence of this threat—which had previously been assumed by some to be too close to the City of Twilight to be credible—, Aia’s Red Rangers, Knights of the Blood Oath, Knights of the Sun; guardsmen of the People’s Militia, and contingents from prominent mercenary guilds all quickly dispatched forces into the nearby foothills to the southwest.

In a few short days, the hidden camp of the goblin warparty was discovered and utterly overwhelmed. Well known for both vicious trap-making and extensive slave trading practices, the band of goblins apparently had enough time to relocate and hide any prisoners before being dispatched. To date, no other survivors have been recovered.

Within the following weeks, the controversy surrounding the tragedy at Dawn’s Hope reached new levels as it was learned that the recently widowed Lady Anaria Honalight of the Noble House of Honalight, along with all of her five children, were named among those missing or dead. The House of Honalight maintains a substantial reward for information relating to their missing family members to this very day, but the attentions of the noble House have since turned away from rescue, and towards infrequent but open criticism of the priests of Aia’s House of Tsohl.

While the military powers associated with the Red Citadel never publicly condemned the venerable Temple of the Sun’s mishandling of the rescue of the Dawn’s Hope settlement, a connection between the Church of Tsohl and this tragedy is common knowledge. Public outrage has calmed, but the Massacre at Dawn’s Hope has forever tarnished the public opinion of Aia’s oldest local church.

Three years have now passed since the Massacre at Dawn’s Hope. Where known among humans, anyone directly associated with the failed rescue of the Dawn’s Hope settlement has felt the dark weight of curiosity, superstition, gossip, and distrust.

All too slowly, memories fade.

Revisions

So, what do you do when you craft a campaign around four characters and then one of those four characters dies unexpectedly at 1st level?

Yeah. I’ve been thinking about that question a lot over the last week.

Broken Site!

Not entirely sure what’s going on, but I think one of the databases connected to this site is corrupted. Things will look very jumbled and chaotic until I can track the problem down.

Update

Reading the three core rulebooks, helping players create characters, writing and editing Google docs with copious notes on worldbuilding, launching a custom web site, researching various online resources,—building a game is an involved (and very enjoyable) process, even if the system is as well-established and familiar as Dungeons & Dragons.

I’ll try to provide these updates/progress reports weekly, in case anyone is curious about these things.

Wisdom vs. Intelligence

Tony had the day off today, so we both installed the Google Hangouts app and spent hours rolling up and developing his characters, discussing Darqbrü lore, and trying to wrap our heads around the many changes which have been made to Dungeons & Dragons since we last played 1st Edition Advanced AD&D, over 20 years ago.

While exploring various game mechanics, including details about how proficiency bonuses relate to a character’s level and how ability score modifiers relate to individual ability scores, Tony found a noteworthy thread on gamegrene.com,“Intelligence Versus Wisdom: Roleplaying The Difference.” If you’re curious about this sort of thing, it’s well worth the read.
